Our manuscript submission guidelines are designed to assist you to get your work into a good, legible format, compatible with current industry standards. 

Electronic submission is preferred, as this saves postage and handling costs for you and makes it easy to send your manuscript, however, hard copy is also acceptable, if you prefer. Please see the Conditions of Assessment below.

Please remember to include your contact details in your covering letter, and to print out and complete the contract of service agreement below. This must be returned to Christine Nagel Literary Services before any assessment work can proceed.

All copy: A cover sheet with the title of the work, your copyright (© followed by your name and year of creation) and contact details should accompany the manuscript. Hard copy manuscripts should be printed, on one side of A4 paper, with wide margins, 1.5 or double-spaced, numbered 1-n, unbound. Also include a brief synopsis of the work with a brief statement describing the target audience for the work. Adequate return packaging or an envelope with postage affixed should also be included. 

Electronic copy: Use your computer’s default settings for A4 page size and select 1.5-line spacing. Insert page numbers and use CTRL+ENTER to insert a page break before each new chapter or section. Do not use any graphics, formatting, style or design tools at this stage as editing may disrupt the style and cause you unnecessary reworking.

Conditions of Assessment

1. Only those hard copy manuscripts for which adequate self addressed packaging of adequate size and adequately stamped will be returned. Please use stamps only when providing return postage (printed receipts for postage are only valid on the day of issue). We recommend Postpak rather than padded envelopes. Submissions that do not meet these requirements will be held for six weeks and then shredded, if adequate postage or funds are not forwarded.
2. Each submission should include, with manuscript: title page, short synopsis (400 words or less), market-position statement (400 words or less) and a writer’s bio (200 words or less).
3. Hard copy submissions should be 1.5 spaced and typewritten on A4 paper, printed on one side only. Pages should be numbered. Manuscripts should be unbound (use elastic bands if desired). We will not assess hand-written material.
4. Reports are not to be published without our approval and quotes and/or extracts must not be used out of context. Only a report in its entirety may be sent with a manuscript as a submission to a publisher and/or literary agent.
5. Christine Nagel Literary Services reserves the right to return manuscripts and payment at its sole discretion without further correspondence.
6. Although an assessment will contain advice on editing (where appropriate), editing of the manuscript is not provided as part of an assessment.
7. Anonymity: Names of assessors will remain anonymous at all times.
8: Authors may use a pseudonym. To ensure the objectivity of the assessment, the author’s true name should not appear on the manuscript, except for the cover sheet (which shall be retained at the Christine Nagel Literary Services office). Authors who submit material with their true name in a header or footer will be deemed to have waived their right to anonymity.
9. Authors must retain a copy of their work as its security remains their responsibility.

Read the above Conditions of Assessment before completing this form. Assessments will not proceed before Christine Nagel Literary Services receives this document fully completed and signed and payment has been processed.

AGREEMENT

I have read and agree to be bound by conditions 1 to 9 in the Conditions of Assessment.

Furthermore, I understand that, while Christine Nagel Literary Services undertakes to handle all submissions with due care, the safety of submitted material cannot be guaranteed, and I agree that they shall not be held responsible or liable for any loss of, or damage to, any submitted material.

I declare that this manuscript is my own original work.

I declare that this document has not been altered after downloading and contains the same conditions as those in Christine Nagel Literary Services' printed contract, and I agree that, by setting my signature to these conditions, I am bound by the conditions in the printed contract.

I seek critical appraisal of my work to help determine its worth and will not dispute the professional opinions expressed in an assessment, should I find them not to my liking. I realise that new writers cannot assess the level of either talent or competence they have thus far attained. I seek an assessment to help me understand what I can realistically expect from my writing. In the event that there is anything I am unable to understand about my report, I am free to discuss it with the Christine Nagel Literary Services, but I will expect no apologies to be made for critical comments made by an assessor in a report, and I accept that no refunds will be made under any circumstances.
